Route 30 and Sabattis Circle Road Outing | Long Lake, NY

Join Northern New York Audubon and the Long Lake Parks & Recreation Department for a guided birding adventure through some of the Adirondacks' most productive boreal habitats.

We'll begin with several birding stops along Route 30 before heading into the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area. Along Sabattis Circle Road, we'll visit a variety of exceptional birding locations, including the Buck Mountain Trailhead (with a porta-potty available), the scenic inlet of Little Tupper Lake, the Round Lake Trailhead, and Sabattis Bog.

This area is one of the premier destinations in the Adirondacks for boreal bird species. Eighteen species of warblers breed along Sabattis Circle Road, including Northern Waterthrush, Mourning, Palm, and Canada Warblers. Other sought-after birds include Black-backed Woodpecker, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Canada Jay, and Lincoln Sparrow, with the possibility of spotting a Boreal Chickadee along Route 30.

Little Tupper Lake and Sabattis Bog lie within the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area, which has been designated an Important Birding Area (IBA) by Audubon New York. The landscape features a rich mix of temperate deciduous forest, boreal forest, and extensive wetlands that provide outstanding habitat for a wide variety of breeding birds.

If time allows, participants are encouraged to bring a lunch as we'll make a stop at the Tupper Lake Marsh viewing deck, where we'll watch for breeding Sandhill Cranes and other marsh birds before concluding the outing.

This program is jointly sponsored by Northern New York Audubon and the Long Lake Parks & Recreation Department.
