We will make a few birding stops in boreal habitat along Route 30 before heading to the William C. Whitney Area. Along Sabattis Circle Road we will make stops at several locations, including the trailhead for Buck Mountain (where there is a port-a-potty), the scenic inlet of Little Tupper Lake, the Round Lake Trailhead, and Sabattis Bog. Eighteen warbler species breed along this road including Northern Waterthrush, Mourning, Palm and Canada Warblers. Many boreal species can be found along Sabattis Circle Road including Black-backed Woodpecker, Olive-sided and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, Canada Jay and Lincoln’s Sparrow (Boreal Chickadee is a possibility along Route 30). Little Tupper Lake and Sabattis Bog are within the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area, a designated Important Birding Area (IBA) by Audubon New York. Temperate deciduous and boreal forest make up most of the surrounding area, with over 30% of the IBA being wetlands. If we have time, we can bring lunch to the Tupper Lake Marsh viewing deck and keep an eye out for the breeding Sandhill Cranes and other marsh birds.
