Bird Outing at Ausable Point Campground

  • Ausable Point Campground 3346 Lakeshore Drive Peru, NY, 12972 United States (map)

Celebrate the excitement of spring migration with a guided bird outing at beautiful Ausable Point Campground on Lake Champlain. Co-sponsored by the Northern New York Audubon (NNYA) and the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department, this outing offers a wonderful opportunity to explore one of the region’s prime birding locations as migratory birds return to the North Country.

Experienced trip leaders Ken Adams, Mar Bodine, and Betsy Miner will guide participants along the campground road, through the beach area, and possibly within the campground itself. This mostly flat route makes for an easy walk, with some short stretches along the beach.

During this exciting time of year, the variety of birds can change from day to day. Participants may encounter early spring migrants and waterfowl, with possible sightings including Pine Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Rusty Blackbird, Red-winged Blackbird, Eastern Phoebe, Caspian Tern, Osprey, and many more. One of the joys of spring birding is the element of surprise—you never know what might appear!

Birders of all experience levels are welcome, from beginners to seasoned observers. A limited number of binoculars and spotting scopes will be available to share, but if you have your own please bring them. Please also bring a camera, water, snacks, and sunscreen.

Space is limited to 20 participants. Priority registration is given to Town of Plattsburgh residents and NNYA members.
